Birkenstock's Rich Heritage
Founded in 1774 in Germany, Birkenstock was an innovator in applying ergonomic principles to shoe construction well before the concept was mainstream. In 1964, shoemaker Konrad Birkenstock developed the company's signature contoured footbed featuring a deep heel cup and arched instep for natural foot alignment. The patent’s success led to opening retail stores across Europe in subsequent decades.
The Arizona and Boston sandals launched globally in 1973, their simple two-strap silhouettes perfectly showcasing the brand's anatomically-designed footbeds. Today those iconic models remain popular thanks to their lightweight cork and latex construction providing supple cushioning, moisture-wicking breathability and arch support for all-day wear.
Sustainable Materials and Craftsmanship
All Birkenstock products utilize renewable, eco-friendly materials like leather uppers, sheepskin linings and natural cork and latex footbeds. These organic compounds mold perfectly to individual foot shapes over time for unmatched customized comfort. And unlike plastic competitors, cork and latex components can be recycled at the end of each sandal's lifespan, keeping waste out of landfills.
Birkenstock's closed production methods oversee every step of the construction process to ensure quality and ethical manufacturing standards are upheld. Savings of up to 80% can be found on ‘birkenstock 80 off’ outlet styles through authorized online retailers, while the same durable comfort and sustainable design philosophies hold true at more accessible price-points.

The sandals and clogs can be spotted just about anywhere, thanks to the brand’s signature cork footbed insoles, earthy tones, and high-quality leather. The shoes have also become a fashion staple for celebs like (Kendall Jenner and Hailey Beiber). And because of the popularity, many other brands have released their own versions of Birkenstock dupes. So we went ahead and rounded up the best of the best out there (with help from TikTokers and customer reviews, of course!).
However, it’s important to note there are no true replacements for the OG’s. You can’t beat the quality and longevity you get with Birkenstocks, which explains the hefty price tags. So, opt for these cheaper alternatives if you’re shopping on a budget and can’t afford to spend over $100 on a pair of sandals. We’ve found great dupes for customer-loved Birkenstock outlet online styles, including the Boston clogs (the TikTok girlies were literally running to Target for this Madden Girl clog), Arizona sandals (this Cushionaire pick also went viral on TikTok!), and Eva slip-ons.
Every shoe on our list is under $50 (woo!), which means you can treat yourself to more than one pair if you’re really looking to splurge. They also happen to be great shower shoes (we recommend going for the waterproof styles only).
Whether you’re looking for a good pair of sandals to match a cute swimsuit (these bright slides are everything) or browsing around for a comfy pair of clogs to keep your feet warm and cozy (like these fur-lined clogs), there’s sure to be a great dupe for you!
..........Read full articleI can’t remember a time when I wasn’t aware of the existence of Birkenstocks. In the early 2000s it was the felted Boston clog, worn by my fellow fifth graders along with speckled Roots socks and sweatpants. Later, in high school, it was the Gizeh sandal spotted on the tan, elongated foot of some popular girl. Today, Birkenstocks have never been cooler, embraced by their original fan base of diligent composters and geology profs, as well as Gen-Z cool kids, fashion influencers and celebrities.
The humble shoe brand has far surpassed anyone’s expectations, demonstrating the power of comfortable, practical footwear. Last week, Birkenstock filed for an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange, with an estimated valuation of over $8 billion USD. If the cork-sole-sandal maker still gives off a folksy, hippie dippie vibe, don’t be fooled: Luxury titan Bernard Arnault of LVMH holds a majority stake. In 2022, sales exceeded $1.7 billion.
Birks as we know them came into being in 1896 when German cobbler Konrad Birkenstock created a sole that was moulded to the arch of the foot, rather than flat — a selling feature that has retained its appeal to this day.
Speaking about the brand’s IPO filing, Birkenstock’s CEO Oliver Reichert called the company “the world’s oldest startup” and claimed that it is addressing “a primal need of all human beings. We are a footbed company selling the experience of walking as intended by nature." A little lofty, arrogant even. But then again, few brands — fashion or otherwise — have survived and thrived for well over a century.
Birkenstock managed to convice fashion people to step down from their once-ubiquitous stilettoes.
GETTY IMAGESBirkenstock’s mass appeal is one thing, but it managed to win over fashion people too. I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when the fashion industry decided to smile upon a brand that was best described as “crunchy,” but my hunch is that it was back in 2013, when Celine’s then-creative-director, Phoebe Philo, presented her take on the flat, wide-strapped sandal. Her genius addition: a neon furry foot bed. These “furkenstocks'' signalled a shift away from the then-ubiquitous perilous stilettos toward something more reasonable, but ultimately just as chic.
Ever since, designers from Isabel Marant to Valentino have continuously put out styles inspired by the signature Birkenstock silhouette, but as fancified takes on them proliferated, Birks never felt like the lesser shoe, rather the bold original. Then, the relationship between Birkenstock and high-fashion labels became more symbiotic, with the brand putting out coveted collaborations with the likes of Proenza Schouler and Manolo Blahnik; becoming part of the LVMH luxury fold in 2021 helped this along.
These limited-edition, high-end collabs are tricky to get one’s hands on. A rich blue velvet Manolo x Birkenstock style, complete with Blahnik’s signature smoky rhinestone buckle sold out almost instantly, even with a price tag of $1,400. But regular styles of Birks are often sold out, too. Last year, fashion TikTok anointed the oatmeal-hued Boston clog an It shoe, resulting in endless wait-lists for a pair.
It’s easy, and tempting, for Birkenstock to take credit for the move away from high heels, but they did not kick-start this phenomenon single-handedly (single-footedly?).
The brand benefited from a mass embrace of comfort in fashion that started around the athleisure craze of the mid-aughts and never slowed. “Once you give people comfort, you can't take it away,” fashion psychologist Dr. Caroline Mair told me years ago.
Add in a pandemic that gave everyone free rein to wear sweats at all times, and reject rigid feminine obligations like underwire bras, hair dye and high heels (and the blisters and pain that come with them) and it was the perfect environment for an orthopedic-first brand to shine. In fact, in statements made following the IPO filing, the brand credited “modern feminism” for its continued growth, writing “the ongoing evolution and expansion of the role of women in society continues to drive meaningful shifts in their preferences in footwear and apparel.”
A Birkenstock cameo in the "Barbie" movie was the brand's pop culture apotheosis.
Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures / Courtesy of Warner Bros. PicturesBirkenstock’s pop-culture apotheosis came this summer, with a cameo in Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking, feminism-infused “Barbie” movie. In the film, a single, humble brown Birkenstock is held up as a symbolic representation of the real, human world, while a pristine, shiny pump stands for the naive, sugary artifice of Barbieland. Later, when (spoiler alert) Barbie decides to fully embrace human life, she does so in a pair of blush pink, cork-soled Arizona sandals. The film ends, the credits roll, and Barbie’s tortured soles are finally at peace. Can you put a price on that kind of unforgettable message? Maybe $8 billion.
Sept 15 (Reuters) - German premium footwear maker Birkenstock Holding's revenue jumped 21% in the nine months ended June 30, it said in updated paperwork for a U.S. stock market listing on Friday.
The company, backed by private equity firm L Catterton, is one of a handful of high-profile firms gearing up for a stock market debut. Others including grocery delivery app Instacart and marketing firm Klaviyo are also expected to list their shares soon.
The company's amended filing comes just a day after a smooth debut from SoftBank Group-backed (9984.T) Arm Holdings .
Birkenstock recorded revenue of 1.12 billion euros ($1.20 billion) for the nine months ended June 30, compared with 921.2 million euros in the same period in the previous fiscal year.
Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) grew 16% to 387 million euros in the same period.
A family-owned business that traces its roots back to 1774, Birkenstock's trademark typically has been comfort rather than fashion. On its website, the company says all elements of its design - the buckles, the straps, the sole and the footbed - have a "functional purpose".
But it has also found favor among fashion aficionados, more so in recent weeks after one of its brands was featured in the blockbuster hit Barbie where Margot Robbie was seen donning a pair of pink Birkenstocks.

That's how the CEO of Birkenstock outlet store begins to explain why the nearly 250-year-old shoemaker is finally deciding to become a publicly traded company.
First-time filings to list on U.S. stock exchanges are typically vaults of monotonous financial data and haughty promises. But this is Birkenstock. It's not here to simply clog along.
"We see ourselves as the oldest start-up on earth," CEO Oliver Reichert writes to potential shareholders. "We are serving a primal need of all human beings. We are a footbed company selling the experience of walking as intended by nature."
The German sandal company is helping to kickstart the U.S. market for initial public offerings that has been sleepy for over a year. Reports suggest the listing on the New York Stock Exchange, expected in October, could value Birkenstock at more than $8 billion.
And sure, the company's prospectus offers all the financial details: Revenues up 19%, net profit down 45% for the six months ending in March compared to a year earlier.
But also foot trivia: "Every foot employs 26 bones, 33 muscles and over 100 tendons and ligaments in walking."
And name-dropping: Shout-outs to fashion deals with Dior, Manolo Blahnik, Rick Owens and Stüssy.
Laced throughout is the Birkenstock lore: The seven generations of the German shoemaking Birkenstock family developing the anatomically shaped cork-and-latex insoles. The "global peace movement and hippies" wearing Birks apparently in "celebration of freedom" during the 1960s and 70s. The women of the 90s seeing the slippers as an escape from "painful high heels and other constricting footwear." And today's wearers choosing Birkenstocks "as a rejection of formal dress culture."
And did you know that the average Birkenstock shopper in the U.S. owns 3.6 pairs? (There's no mention whether the 0.6 is the left or right shoe.)
"Some say: 'Birkenstock is having a moment,'" CEO Reichert writes, perhaps in a nod to the sandal's notable cameo in the Barbie movie. "I always reply then 'this moment has lasted for 250 years, and it will continue to last.'"
The company is fresh from a major re-boot. In 2021, the company for the first time accepted private equity funds. Its majority owner is now L Catterton, a firm backed by French luxury conglomerate LVMH (that's Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton).
"We respect and honor our past, but we are not a mausoleum — Birkenstock online is a living, breathing brand," Reichert writes in hopes of persuading (per-suede-ing?) investors that the company "remains empowered by a youthful energy level, with all the freshness and creative versatility of an inspired Silicon Valley start-up."
Birkenstock wants to trade under the ticker symbol "BIRK." But before it does, it wants you to remember: "Improper footwear can cause friction, pain, injury and poor posture, among other ailments."
